Surviving the Storm: A Morning Walk Thriller

Usually, my morning walks with Mom are the quietest part of my day. At 7:30 AM, the world is soft, the air is still, and we’re just two people hitting our step goals. But something weird happened that day.

One minute we were strolling at the far end of the block; the next, the sky pulled a disappearing act. It didn’t just get cloudy—it turned pitch black. The wind didn’t just blow; it started screaming like a scene straight out of a Netflix horror special.

The force was so intense it was almost personal. My mother, usually steady as a rock, nearly lost her balance. Her walking stick started vibrating, and the wind literally snatched the glasses right off her face.

The “No-Phone” Dilemma

We scrambled for cover under a staircase, huddled against the “whooshing” roar of a storm that sounded like a freight train. That’s when the irony hit: We had no phones.

In our commitment to a “digital-free” walk, we were stranded without a lifeline. Luckily, a househelp taking cover with us had an old-school Nokia. But in the pitch-black darkness of the storm, I couldn’t even see the keypad. It was a frantic game of “hit and trial” until I finally managed to dial home to let them know we were still on this planet.

The Great Staircase Reunion

Our “rescuer” eventually guided us to the flat where she worked, where we hid out until the 20-minute riot outside finally died down.

When we finally emerged, we ran into my sister on the stairs.

She had come out looking for us, and honestly? It felt like a scene from a blockbuster family reunion. We live in the same society and see each other every day, but after those twenty minutes of chaos, seeing a familiar face felt like a miracle.

The Takeaway

Nature has a funny way of reminding us of our place. One minute you’re worried about your step count, and the next, you’re just grateful to have your feet on solid ground.

The lesson? Maybe bring the phone next time. Or, at the very least, hold onto your glasses!
